Mind Mapping Project : The Dangers of Smoking in Public Places

Did you know that passive smokers are 4 times more likely to get cancer?

Yup. Passive smokers are 4 times more likely to develop cancer than people who have never been exposed to secondhand smoke. Passive smokers are more affected than active smokers because there is a filter when active smokers smoke cigarettes directly. While passive smokers inhale the smoke directly from cigarettes and smoke that has come out of the lungs of smokers without a filter.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Then, what does The Sustainable Development Goals have to do with the smoking problem?

Of course, It's related. Good health and well-being is one of the points of The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that we must achieve together. Then how can we achieve The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the future? Here I will share the little things that I do that might help to make it happen.

Me as a high school student, personally got this assignment from my English teacher, Ma'am Diana to help make it happen. We started by forming a group consisting of 4 students, then we made a mind map related to good health and well-being. On the mind map itself, there are investigation, preparation & planning, and action on what we're gonna do to help realize the SDGs for good health and well-being. Example :

I personally choose The Dangers of Smoking in Public Places as an example of good health and well-being. The reason I chose this problem is because I feel that in Indonesia there are still a lot of people who smoke in public places.

The first step of the mind map is to do the investigation. My investigation is to make observations about the number of smokers in public places and the consequences of it. Turns out that the prevalence was 33.8 percent, or about 65.7 million people in Indonesia are smokers with most of them smoking in public places among people. The consequences as we know, can damage the health of active smokers and increase the risk of cancer in both active and passive smokers.

Then, the second step is to make preparation and planning. My preparation and planning to reduce this problem is to create a poster about the prohibition of smoking in public places. I personally made a poster using Canva and PicsArt apps. Example :

Finally, the last step is to take an action. My action according to this problem is to share the poster I've made through various media. But since the pandemic happened, it would be quite difficult to go out and distribute the posters. That's why I decided to share the posters I've made on social media. Example :

With this, I hope that a lot of people can contribute to realizing The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for a bright future. That's all from me, I hope this blog can be useful for many people. Thank you.❤

What you write helps to warn about the dangers of smoking, which may motivate others to slow down and reduce their use because it is not good for themselves and those around you. Very good

Active smokers are too selfish when smoking and do not care about the people around them. Most of them only feel the good taste of cigarettes without knowing the negative impact on their health. In addition, people around him who inhale cigarette smoke can also feel the harmful effects of cigarette smoke. I hope that the actions you have taken can make them aware of not smoking in public places.

    1. Actually there are many ways to overcome smoking addiction, such as:
      1. Make a list of reasons why you should quit smoking.
      2. Make yourself busy with various activities so that you forget about smoking.
      3. Avoid hanging out with the smokers to reduce the temptation to smoke.
      4. Nicotine replacement therapy, for example using patches, candy, inhalers and nasal sprays.
      5. Behavioral therapy performed by experts to find the most appropriate way to quit smoking, etc.

Good job Adel. I totally agree with your actions by spreading posters on various social media, besides during these current pandemic, people do all their activities from home and always use gadgets. Through your articles and your actions by spreading posters on various social media can increase public awareness of the dangers of cigarette smoke for passive smokers. Thank youu
